Vitamin C is used in human and animal nutritional health. In animal nutrition, it is used as supplements in e.g. the aquaculture industry. Ascorbic acid or the more stable phosphate is used in fish farming to prevent scurvy and enhance immune response. For humans, Vitamin C is offered in the form of conventional tablets, effervescent and chewable tablets, time-release tablets, syrups, powders, granules, capsules, drops and ampoules, either alone or in multivitamin-mineral preparations.
A number of fruit juices, fruit flavor drinks, and breakfast cereals are enriched with vitamin C (this is referred to as food fortification). On average in Europe, vitamin C supplements provide between 5.8 % and 8.3 % of total vitamin C intake.
